On Thursday, March 13, passionate parent advocates and dedicated Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) gathered at the Prince George’s County Council Hearing on their minimum wage bill to make a powerful case: DSPs deserve higher wages.
Representing The Arc Prince George’s County, these advocates shared personal stories, highlighting the critical role DSPs play in the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Parent advocate Alverda McCoy delivered a heartfelt testimony, emphasizing that DSPs are not just caregivers—they are mentors, life coaches, and a lifeline for individuals with disabilities.
“DSPs provide essential support, ensuring our loved ones lead fulfilling, independent lives,” McCoy stated. “Yet, many struggle to make ends meet. If we don’t invest in them, we risk losing the very people who make inclusion possible.”
Alongside family advocates, several DSPs took the stand, sharing their experiences of dedication, long hours, and financial struggles due to low wages. Their testimonies underscored the urgent need for the county to prioritize fair pay to retain and attract skilled professionals.
The message was clear: competitive wages are not just about workforce retention; they are about dignity, quality care, and sustaining a community that values inclusion.
The Arc Prince George’s County is committed to continuing this fight, but we need your support!
